Chapter 1 - The Broken Table

The heavy crystal vase had barely stopped rolling across the plush living room rug when Clara hit the floor. Shards of the marble-topped coffee table scattered like jagged diamonds around her light blue, off-the-shoulder dress. The air in the penthouse smelled faintly of expensive champagne and crushed winter jasmine, a sharp contrast to the sudden, suffocating silence that had fallen over the cocktail party. Guests in designer evening wear froze halfway between the bar and the balcony, their expressions locked in a collective gasp.

Marcus was already moving, his grey suit jacket pulling tight across his broad shoulders as he dropped heavily onto his knees beside her. He reached out, his calloused fingers brushing away a stray shard of glass resting against her collarbone. His touch wasn't gentle; it was a firm, possessive grip disguised as rescue.

Clara winced, her green eyes darting upward to meet his cold, calculating gaze. She swallowed hard, her breath catching in her throat as she whispered,

“Marcus, this keeps happening.”

Marcus leaned in close, his face inches from hers. The ambient party music faded into a dull drone as his features hardened into something vicious and terrifying.

“You always were clumsy when you wanted attention, Clara,” he muttered under his breath, his voice venomous and low enough that only she could hear.

“Stop playing the victim. You knew the rules when you signed the papers.”

Across the shattered glass, Elena stood rigid in her dark maroon sleeveless dress. Her intense, aggressive glare pierced through the dim lighting, her fingernails digging deep into the palm of her hand until her skin turned white. She hadn’t flinched when the table broke. She had planned for this moment, yet something in the timing felt horribly wrong.

Suddenly, the heavy oak double doors of the penthouse burst open. Julian strode in wearing a dark blue suit, his chest heaving as he scanned the wreckage. His face was pale, his eyes wide with genuine panic. Without lowering his voice, he shouted across the ruined room, pointing a trembling finger directly at Marcus.

“The first fall already failed!”

Elena’s jaw dropped, her mouth hanging open in silent horror as Julian’s words echoed off the high ceilings. The guests erupted into chaotic murmurs. Marcus didn’t look back at Julian. Instead, his hand slowly slid from Clara’s shoulder down to her wrist, tightening until the bones crunched audibly against the carpet.
