Chapter 13 - Torrent of Truth

The freezing water poured down in a relentless, blinding sheet, soaking through Clara’s detention jumpsuit and instantly plastering Julian’s hair across his frantic forehead. The sudden deluge threw his aim off by a fraction of a second. The gunshot went off with a deafening roar, the bullet splintering the concrete wall inches above Agent Miller’s head, sending a spray of sharp stone dust into the air.
Miller didn't hesitate. With practiced precision, he lunged forward, slamming his shoulder directly into Julian’s chest and driving the wounded man hard against the wet concrete wall. The stolen pistol slipped from Julian’s fingers, clattering loudly against the flooded floor before skittering away into the darkness.
Julian groaned as Miller’s knee pinned him firmly to the ground, the remaining strength draining rapidly from his frame as water soaked through his blood-stained jumpsuit.
“It’s over, Julian,” Miller panted, pressing a heavy zip-tie fastener tightly around Julian’s wrists with practiced efficiency.
“Attempted murder of a federal agent, treason, and conspiracy to commit murder. You’re never seeing the sun rise outside a maximum-security cell again.”
Clara stood unmoving in the downpour, water dripping from her hair and running down her face. She didn't look at Julian; instead, her green eyes were fixed on the end of the flooded hallway where a set of heavy fire doors stood slightly ajar. Sticking out from behind the door frame was a scrap of dark maroon fabric—the exact signature of Elena’s dress.
Without saying a word to Miller, Clara began walking toward the fire exit, her bare feet splashing steadily through the ankle-deep water accumulating on the concrete floor.
“Mrs. Vance! Stay back!” Miller shouted over the roaring sound of the broken sprinkler pipes, struggling to keep Julian pinned while reaching for his radio.
“Backup is entering the sector now! Do not engage!”
Clara ignored him entirely. She pushed past the heavy fire doors and stepped out into the pitch-black stairwell. The emergency strobes didn't reach down into this stairwell, leaving it shrouded in absolute, suffocating shadow. The air smelled of damp concrete and expensive French perfume—the unmistakable scent of winter jasmine.
“I know you’re here, Elena,” Clara called out into the darkness, her voice steady and echoing clearly down the empty concrete steps.
“You can run through the federal corridors, but you can't hide the fact that you pulled the trigger in the parking lot.”
A slow, chilling chuckle echoed from the flight of stairs leading up toward the roof access door. A slim silhouette slowly materialized out of the shadows, bathed in the faint green glow of an exit sign. Elena stood there, her dark maroon dress soaked and ruined, but her hands were steady, and her eyes burned with an intense, aggressive madness. In her right hand, she casually held a heavy steel crowbar, dripping with fresh, dark blood.
“You really think you won, don't you, Clara?” Elena whispered, her voice slicing through the dripping water like a razor.
“Marcus was always too soft. He wanted to play domestic games with you. But I knew the truth about your father from the very beginning. And I know the real reason why you let him die in that study.”

Clara’s breath hitched in her throat, the iron mask of control cracking for the first time as Elena took a slow, deliberate step down toward her.
