Chapter 4 - Sirens and Shadows

The red and blue light washed over the broken glass, making the scattered shards sparkle like cheap diamonds in a cheap horror movie. Down on the street, the wail of police cruisers cut through the night air, stopping directly beneath the grand entrance of the luxury high-rise. Inside the penthouse, the remaining guests panicked, stampeding toward the service stairs and emergency exits like rats abandoning a sinking ship.

Elena rushed to the floor-to-ceiling windows, pulling back the heavy velvet curtain just enough to peer down. Her face lost all its color.

“Federal agents,” she whispered, her voice trembling as she turned back to face the room.

“Not local police, Marcus. Federal marshals. They’re swarming the lobby. Someone tipped them off hours ago.”

Marcus stood up slowly, his eyes fixed on Clara, who was still sitting gracefully among the wreckage of the table, cradling her bleeding hand. The realization hit him with the force of a physical blow. The fall, the shattered table, the screaming match with Julian—it had all been a diversion. Clara hadn't tripped by accident; she had staged the entire scene to trap him in the penthouse long enough for the authorities to arrive with a warrant.

“You planned this,” Marcus muttered, his voice dangerously low as he stepped over a large piece of marble.

“From the very beginning tonight. You wanted me cornered here, with witnesses, with the evidence.”

Clara didn't deny it. She slowly used the edge of the sofa to push herself up, ignoring the sharp glass pressing into her shoes. She stood tall, smoothing out the front of her ruined light blue dress despite the blood staining the fabric.

“You locked me in the east wing for three days, Marcus,” she said, her voice echoing clearly in the half-empty room.

“You thought isolation would break me. You thought I’d quietly accept another ‘accidental’ fall down the stairs. But you underestimated what a cornered person will do to survive.”

Julian backed away toward the double doors, his hands raised defensively.

“I’m out of this,” Julian stammered, his eyes darting toward the elevators.

“I had nothing to do with the offshore accounts. Marcus forced my signature!”

Elena whipped around, her maroon dress swirling around her ankles as she rounded on Julian with a vicious snarl.

“Shut up, you coward! We go down together or we don't go down at all. If Marcus falls, he takes your entire family’s shipping empire with him!”

Heavy, synchronized footsteps suddenly echoed from the private hallway outside the penthouse. The distinct sound of tactical boots marching on hardwood floors signaled that time had officially run out. Marcus ignored Elena and Julian entirely. With terrifying speed, he reached inside his grey suit jacket, his hand disappearing into the inner pocket. Clara’s eyes widened as she heard the unmistakable metallic click of a hidden firearm being drawn.
