Chapter 5

Arthur froze on the second step, sensing the sudden shift in the atmosphere before he even registered the threat. The flashing red and blue police lights outside abruptly strobed against the interior walls, casting a surreal, theatrical tint over the entire scene. In the foyer, the officers pinning Marcus to the ground suddenly shouted warnings, weapons drawn as they looked out toward the darkened tree line across the street.
"Sniper! Get down!" Marcus bellowed, struggling against his cuffs as professional survival instincts kicked in.
David scrambled blindly on the kitchen floor, trying to wedge his body beneath the breakfast bar. Martha didn't hesitate; she bolted toward the stairs, her black trousers rustling as she leaped up the risers to shield her daughter. She grabbed Lily by the shoulders, yanking the little girl backward into the shadow of the upstairs linen closet just as a deafening crack shattered the night.
A high-caliber bullet tore through the front window, embedding itself deeply into the hardwood staircase railing just inches from where Arthur was standing. Wood splinters rained down on the carpet.
Upstairs in the suffocating darkness of the closet, Lily buried her face in Martha's blue button-down shirt. Her little hands still clutched the blue smartphone, which was now flashing a low-battery warning across its cracked screen. The dispatcher's voice was still faintly audible from the speaker, repeating frantic requests for status updates.
Downstairs, Arthur didn't panic. With calculated slowness, he pulled a compact satellite phone from his interior suit pocket, his thumb pressing a pre-programmed speed dial button. His eyes remained fixed on the shattered front entrance where the second sniper round punched a hole through the drywall.
"Extraction team Alpha, we are compromised at the suburban safehouse," Arthur spoke into the device, his voice remarkably steady. "Initiate counter-measures on the treeline. Do not let the shooter escape alive."
Outside, the sharp pop of suppressed automatic gunfire erupted from the perimeter, followed by the heavy thud of a body hitting the pavement. The police officers inside the house scrambled to secure the perimeter doors, shouting commands into their shoulder radios.
Martha held Lily tightly, whispering soothing reassurances into her curls, though her own heart was hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She peeked cautiously through the louvered doors of the linen closet, watching the hallway below.
Arthur turned around slowly, looking up the stairs toward the closet. His expression was grim, carrying a weight that suggested this violence was merely the opening salvo of a much larger war. He took a step upward, clearing his throat before speaking.

"Martha, Lily," Arthur called out, his voice cutting through the ringing silence left by the gunfire. "We have to leave this house right now. The people who backed David aren't going to let any of us walk away alive."
As Martha stepped out of the closet with Lily in her arms, a bright beam of light suddenly swept across the upstairs hallway ceiling from the window behind them.
