Chapter 1

The kitchen tile felt bitterly cold against Martha’s bare feet as David’s thick fingers clamped around her throat. His white polo shirt was spotless, a sharp contrast to the ugly, swelling purple bruise blooming across her left cheekbone. His breath smelled of stale whiskey and mounting panic, a toxic mixture that suffocated the air in the room. He shoved her backward against the edge of the granite countertop, making the ceramic fruit bowl rattle violently.

"You’re lying to me!" David shouted, his voice cracking with a manic edge that terrified her more than the physical pain.

"I didn't tell anyone, David," Martha rasped, her hands clawing weakly at his wrists. "Please, just listen to me."

"Don't lie!" he roared, tightening his grip just enough to cut off her breath.

At the dining table just beyond the archway, eight-year-old Lily froze in her pink knit sweater. Her small hands flew up to cover her mouth, muffling a choked sob as horror widened her eyes. Without a sound, she turned and sprinted toward the stairs.

Upstairs in the dark hallway, Lily’s small, trembling fingers unlocked the blue smartphone she had hidden beneath her mattress. She frantically pressed the device against her ear, tears spilling over her lashes.

"Daddy is hitting mommy!" she whispered into the line, her voice breaking.

Downstairs, the back glass doors suddenly shattered outward in an explosion of safety glass. Headlights from a idling sedan cut through the dust, casting long, menacing shadows across the kitchen floor. Three men in identical black suits stepped smoothly over the threshold, their expressions carved from stone.

At the front of the group, a sixty-five-year-old man in a tailored black suit stepped forward, looking intensely downward at David with a terrifying, grim expression.

"That was for my daughter," the older man said softly.

David released Martha instantly, his face draining of all color as he stared at the intruder.
