Chapter 13

The heavy armored tire of the sedan rolled forward an inch under Thomas's panicked control, crushing the blue smartphone into a thousand glittering pieces of plastic and glass. The voice on the line cut off mid-sentence with a sharp, electronic screech. Silence descended instantly upon the highway, save for the thrumming roar of the military helicopter hovering overhead.

"Martha, what did you do?!" Arthur shouted, grabbing her shoulders to steady her against the sudden violence of the moment.

"I cut the line," Martha panted, her chest heaving as she stared down at the ruined wreckage of the phone. Her bruised face was slick with rain and sweat, but her eyes burned with absolute clarity. "If he had a live GPS ping on that device, he would have tracked us wherever we went. Breaking the connection was the only way to blind him."

Above them, the stealth aircraft’s high-pitched turbine whine suddenly altered in pitch. The rotary cannon stopped spinning. The pilot on the military helicopter’s comms radio crackled to life, shouting a frantic warning.

"Boss! We have multiple incoming radar signatures! Stealth interceptors inbound from the federal reserve sector! They’re locking onto our transponder!"

Arthur didn't hesitate. He scooped Lily up into his arms, shielding her small body against his chest, and gestured sharply toward the open side hatch of the military helicopter. "Get in! Everyone inside right now!"

Thomas scrambled up the rope ladder first, providing covering fire with his submachine gun pointed toward the dark treeline. Martha climbed up next, her hands trembling as she pulled herself into the secure cabin. Arthur followed closely behind, clutching Lily tightly as the heavy cabin door slammed shut and sealed with a heavy pneumatic hiss.

"Lift off! Max throttle! Evasive maneuvers!" the pilot barked into his headset.

The military helicopter surged upward into the stormy night sky, banking sharply to the left just as a volley of tracer rounds from the stealth interceptor zipped past the spot where they had been standing seconds earlier. Through the reinforced glass windows of the cabin, Martha watched the highway recede into a dark, rainy ribbon far below.

Inside the dimly lit cabin, the electronic control panels blinked with a chaotic array of red and amber warning lights. The communications officer was furiously typing commands into a ruggedized terminal, trying to re-establish a secure encrypted tunnel.

"We lost the satellite link, sir," the officer reported, looking up at Arthur with a grim expression. "Senator Vance’s cyber-team has locked us out of the military relay network. We're flying blind."

Arthur set Lily down gently on a jump seat, kneeling beside her to make sure she was unharmed. The little girl was pale, her pink knit sweater damp and stained with mud, but she managed a brave, trembling smile for her grandfather.

"We're going to be okay, pumpkin," Arthur whispered, kissing the top of her head. He stood up, turning to face the tactical officer with a gaze forged in absolute resolve. "If Vance thinks he can hide behind his Senate seat and a wall of digital red tape, he’s gravely mistaken. We don't need the satellite network. We have the physical backup."

Martha stepped forward, wiping her wet blonde hair from her face. "Physical backup? Arthur, what are you talking about? You said the downtown vault was burned to the ground."

"The vault in the skyscraper was the decoy," Arthur said, a grim, triumphant smile touching his lips for the first time that night. "The Ledger of Genesis—every hard drive, every signed confession, every financial ledger—was never kept downtown. It's stored in the family estate's underground panic room two hundred miles north."

Thomas slammed his fist onto the cabin wall in realization. "The old family property in the mountains. The one nobody has visited in a decade."

May you like

"Exactly," Arthur nodded. "And Vance doesn't even know it exists."

The helicopter banked hard, altering its course toward the northern mountain range. But as the aircraft leveled out, the cabin’s emergency power grid suddenly flickered and died, plunging them into total darkness.
