The sudden loss of power plunged the helicopter cabin into an eerie, suffocating blackness. The rhythmic hum of the jet turbines sputtered and choked for two terrifying seconds before the emergency backup generators kicked in, bathing the interior in a dim, pulsing red glow. Warning klaxons began to wail softly from the instrument panel at the front of the aircraft.
"What was that?!" Thomas barked, drawing his sidearm as he braced himself against the swaying bulkhead.
The pilot’s voice came over the intercom, tight with panic. "We’ve lost primary hydraulics! Someone just uploaded a malicious firmware patch through our onboard diagnostic port. We're experiencing total flight-control degradation!"
Martha pulled Lily close, shielding the little girl against her chest as the helicopter shuddered violently, dipping its nose toward the dark, sprawling expanse of forest below. "Are we going to crash?" she asked, her voice cracking for the first time all night.
"No," Arthur declared, his voice cutting through the panic like a knife. He grabbed the pilot's shoulder console, overriding the manual controls with an emergency physical override switch located beneath the dashboard. "Stabilize the tail rotor! Override the flight computer and fly analog!"
The pilot fought the bucking controls, sweat pouring down his forehead as he wrestled the heavy aircraft into a steady, albeit descending, glide. "We can't make the mountain estate, sir! The hydraulics are failing completely. We have to set down in the valley below!"
Through the windshield, a vast, dense pine forest loomed rapidly closer, illuminated only by the pale, watery light of a crescent moon breaking through the storm clouds.
