Chapter 3

The heavy wooden front door crashed against the interior drywall with a deafening thud, sending a fresh wave of panic through the quiet house. Two more men in black tactical gear poured into the front foyer, their weapons lowered but ready. David gasped, a hysterical laugh escaping his lips as he looked between Arthur and the new arrivals.
"You think you own the board, Arthur, but you don't own the street," David hissed, adrenaline briefly overriding his fear. "Those aren't your men."
Arthur didn't blink. He raised two fingers without turning around, and his personal bodyguards immediately formed a protective wall between the kitchen and the foyer. The tension in the room spiked instantly. The air grew thick with the smell of ozone, spilled whiskey, and impending violence.
"Lower your weapons, Marcus," Arthur commanded coldly, addressing the lead man who had just breached the front entrance.
Marcus, a rugged man with a jagged scar running down his jawline, ignored Arthur’s order. He stepped further into the living room, his cold eyes locking onto David. The blue smartphone in Lily's upstairs grip buzzed violently against her palm, an incoming text notification illuminating her tear-streaked face.
"We didn't come for Arthur’s permission, old man," Marcus said, his voice grating and deep. "We came to settle the debt David owes to the syndicate. The merger papers were just a cover. David embezzled four million dollars from our offshore accounts to fund this suburban lifestyle."
Martha pushed herself off the counter, her eyes widening in sheer disbelief. She looked at her husband, the man she had shared a bed with for a decade. "David? Four million dollars? Is that what all of this was about? The isolation, the threats, the beatings?"
David shrank back against the refrigerator, his arrogance evaporating completely. "I had to! The market crashed, and the board was going to pin it on me. I was going to pay it back!"
Upstairs, Lily watched the chaos unfold through the wooden banister slats. Her little fingers fumbled with the blue smartphone screen, accidentally hitting the redial button for the emergency services number she had dialed moments earlier. The phone clicked, connecting the call directly to a dispatcher, broadcasting the screaming match straight to the authorities.
Marcus took a menacing step toward the kitchen, pulling a heavy steel zip-tie from his jacket pocket. Arthur stepped directly into his path, his posture unyielding despite his age.

"You will not touch my family in this house," Arthur warned, his hand sliding inside his suit jacket.
Before Marcus could lunge past the older patriarch, the wailing shriek of approaching police sirens pierced the night air, echoing loudly down the suburban street.
