Chapter 2

David stumbled backward, his white polo shirt snagging on the edge of the chrome oven handle. He caught his balance, blinking hard against the blinding glare of the headlights pouring through the shattered back doors. The older man in the black suit did not rush; his movements were deliberate, weighted with a lifetime of accumulated power and unforgiving fury. Martha slumped against the granite counter, gasping for air, her blue button-down shirt torn at the collar. She pressed a trembling hand to her bruised face, watching the patriarch with a mix of dread and unexpected relief.
"Arthur," David managed to choke out, his voice losing all its previous venom. "You shouldn't be here. This is a private family matter."
Arthur didn't flinch. He took another measured step forward, his polished oxblood shoes crunching on the glittering shards of safety glass scattered across the kitchen floor. The two suits flanking him fanned out silently, securing the perimeter with military precision. Arthur’s silver hair was neatly combed, framing a face lined with deep grief and unyielding resolve. His eyes remained fixed on David, piercing straight through the younger man's desperate facade.
"Family?" Arthur repeated, the word tasting like poison on his tongue. "You lost the right to that word the moment you raised a hand against my blood. Martha is my daughter, David. Did you honestly believe you could isolate her in this upscale cage and I wouldn't notice the fractures beneath the surface?"
David wiped a sweaty palm down his gray trousers. "She provoked me. She’s been talking to outsiders, leaking details about the company merger. She’s trying to ruin everything we built."
"She was trying to save what’s left of her soul," Arthur countered, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous register that echoed off the high ceiling. "And now, you are going to pay the toll for every single tear she shed in this house."
From the top of the dark staircase, a soft creak broke the heavy tension. Arthur glanced up instinctively, his stern features softening for a fraction of a second as he caught sight of a small pink knit sweater hovering near the railing.

"Lily, sweetheart," Arthur called out gently, extending an open hand toward the stairs. "Come down to grandpa. You're safe now."
Lily clutched the blue smartphone tighter against her chest, her wide eyes darting from her trembling mother to the terrifying strangers below. She took one hesitant step forward, but before her foot could touch the next riser, the front door downstairs was violently kicked off its hinges.
