Chapter 9 - The Ghost of the Boardroom

The morning sun cast long, golden rays across the polished mahogany table of the Vance Corporation boardroom, but the room felt as cold as a tomb. Chloe sat in the center leather chair, wearing a clean navy blue blazer over her peach button-up shirt, the faint red mark on her cheek now covered with a light dusting of concealer. Across from her sat three senior members of the board of directors, their expressions grim and tired as they reviewed the original documents recovered from the wall safe. Detective Miller stood quietly near the oversized glass windows overlooking the city skyline, ensuring complete security while the corporate restructuring took place.
"We had no idea," Mr. Henderson, the elderly chairman of the board, said softly, his hands trembling as he laid down Arthur Vance’s final testament. "Marcus presented us with notarized proxy votes six months ago, claiming your mother and grandfather had voluntarily stepped down due to failing health."
Chloe looked straight into the eyes of the men who had worked alongside her grandfather for over thirty years, her voice steady and resolute despite her youth.
"My grandfather never stepped down from anything, and my mother was poisoned before she could uncover how Marcus was embezzling funds from the overseas accounts," Chloe stated, sliding a certified forensic audit report across the polished wood. "These records prove that every single resolution passed under Marcus’s leadership is legally void."
The board members exchanged anxious glances, whispering among themselves as they scanned the damning financial trails leading directly to offshore accounts controlled by Eleanor.
"If these documents are fully authenticated by the federal court, the board will formally reinstate you as the majority shareholder of Vance Holdings," Henderson admitted, though a deep frown creaked across his weathered face. "However, there is a major complication that even your grandfather’s testament couldn't completely anticipate."
Chloe leaned forward, her heart skipping a beat as she sensed another obstacle standing in her way.
"What kind of complication?" Chloe asked sharply, her grip tightening on the edge of the boardroom table.
"Last night, before our cyber-security team locked out the administrative credentials, someone executed an automated emergency transfer of sixty million dollars out of the primary development trust," Henderson explained gravely, tapping the audit report. "The funds were funneled through three different shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands under an alias."
Detective Miller stepped away from the window, his brow furrowed in deep concentration as he processed the new information.
"That means Marcus and Eleanor had a contingency plan all along," Miller said grimly. "Even behind bars, they have an accomplice on the outside who is currently draining the remaining assets before we can freeze the accounts."

As the board members scrambled to contact their legal teams, Chloe’s phone buzzed aggressively on the table with an incoming text message from an unknown, encrypted number.
