Chapter 12 - The Confession on Tape

The deafening splash of Vance hitting the freezing dark water of Lake Mercer echoed through the boathouse as Detective Miller rushed forward to secure the area. Two federal agents swarmed past, diving into the murky shallows with tactical gear, quickly subduing the struggling security guard before he could reach a hidden speedboat idling beneath the dock. Miller holstered his firearm and walked quickly over to Chloe, his expression a mix of profound relief and stern reprimand.
"Are you alright, Chloe?" Miller asked, placing a steadying hand on her shoulder as she let out a long, shaky breath. "That was entirely too close; he almost reached the detonator switch."
Chloe nodded slowly, reaching down to pick up the manila folder that Vance had dropped during the scuffle on the wooden planks.
"I'm okay, Detective," Chloe replied, her fingers tracing the edge of the confidential coroner's file as she pulled out the original papers. "Look at the signature on the secondary toxicology report. It’s not just Eleanor’s handwriting; Marcus signed off on the restricted pharmaceutical purchase order himself two weeks before my mother fell ill."
Miller took the document, shining his tactical flashlight directly onto the bottom signature block where Marcus’s distinct, looping handwriting was unmistakably clear.
"This isn't just obstruction of justice anymore," Miller said grimly, sliding the file into a secure evidence bag. "This is premeditated murder in the first degree. This document alone guarantees they will never see the outside of a maximum-security prison."
As they stepped out of the damp boathouse into the crisp morning air, Detective Miller’s encrypted radio crackled to life with an urgent dispatch from the downtown precinct holding facility.
"Agent Miller, come in," a frantic voice crackled through the speaker. "We’ve got a major situation down at the central holding block. Marcus Sterling just demanded an immediate audience with the federal prosecutor, claiming he has a full confession to make regarding a wider corporate conspiracy."
Chloe and Miller exchanged a sharp, knowing glance as they realized the walls were finally closing in completely on the master manipulator.
"Tell them to hold him in interrogation room B," Miller ordered into his shoulder mic. "We’re heading back right now with the final physical evidence."
Forty-five minutes later, sitting behind the two-way glass of the central precinct observation room, Chloe watched her father sweat under the harsh fluorescent lights of the interrogation table. Marcus looked completely defeated, his expensive dark suit rumpled and his red silk tie loosened so far it hung limply around his collar.

"I'll give you everything," Marcus said, his voice cracking with desperation as he leaned across the steel table toward the federal prosecutor. "The offshore accounts, the dummy corporations, the forged bylaws—I'll sign over every single cent of the estate today, if you drop the capital murder charges against me."
