Chapter 1 - The Threshold of Banishment

The cool evening air did little to soothe the burning sting of the crimson mark throbbing across Chloe’s left cheek. Standing outside the massive sliding glass door of the only home she had ever known, her fingers tightly gripped the strap of her small white shoulder bag. The smooth glass reflected the distorted image of her tear-stained face, framing her tangled blonde hair against the peach-colored button-up shirt she had worn all day at school. Inside the brightly lit kitchen, Eleanor stood towering over her, her emerald-green silk blouse catching the harsh recessed lighting as her face twisted into a mask of pure malice. Eleanor’s thin lips curled back as she lunged forward, grabbing Chloe’s bare shoulder with manicured fingernails that dug painfully through the fabric, shaking her violently while spittle flew from her mouth.
"Your mother is gone!" Eleanor screamed, her voice echoing shrilly against the pristine quartz countertops and marble floors. "Now this is my house!"
Chloe gasped, her breath catching in her throat as she tried to pull away from the suffocating grip.
"You have no right to talk to me like that," Chloe sobbed quietly, her voice trembling with a mixture of raw grief and indignation. "This was my mother’s home before she even met you, before you ruined everything!"
"Watch your tone, ungrateful little brat," Eleanor sneered, her green silk blouse rustling sharply as she tightened her hold. "Your mother is dead and buried, and your father belongs to me now. Pack your cheap clothes and get out of my sight before I make your life even more miserable."
From the grand curved staircase in the foyer, the heavy, measured thud of leather-soled shoes resonated against the wood. Marcus descended slowly, his dark tailored suit impeccably pressed and his red silk tie knotted to absolute perfection. His expression was a cold, impenetrable mask of stern authority, his eyes devoid of any paternal warmth as he surveyed the scene unfolding before him. He did not rush to comfort his weeping teenage daughter, nor did he pull his hostile new wife away. Instead, Marcus stopped on the bottom step, adjusting his gold-rimmed watch with chilling indifference.
"Eleanor is right, Chloe," Marcus said, his deep voice cutting through the tense silence like a razor blade. "It is time you learned how the real world works."
Chloe stared at her father in absolute horror, her heart shattering into a million pieces as she realized she was completely alone.
"Dad, how can you just stand there and let her do this to me?" Chloe whispered, a fresh wave of hot tears spilling over her lashes. "She hit me, look at my face!"
"I saw nothing," Marcus replied coldly, turning his back on her to walk toward the living room.

As the heavy sliding door began to latch shut, a glint of light on the kitchen floor caught Chloe’s eye, revealing a hidden document sticking out of Eleanor's designer handbag.
