Chapter 7 - The Warrant at Midnight

The heavy front doors of the mansion rattled under a series of loud, authoritative knocks that shook the crystal chandelier hanging in the grand foyer. Eleanor stood frozen at the top of the stairs, her green silk blouse wrinkled from panic as she stared down at the flashing red and blue lights reflecting off the marble floor. Marcus released his grip on Chloe’s collar so fast she stumbled backward against the wall, his stern demeanor fracturing into a sweaty, desperate scramble for damage control.

"Vance, get down the back service stairs and wipe the local drive on the security server immediately," Marcus ordered in a frantic whisper, his hands trembling slightly as he adjusted his red silk tie. "Eleanor, go down there, put on your most charming smile, and stall them at the door for as long as humanly possible."

Chloe wiped a streak of dust from her cheek, feeling a surge of vindication as she pushed herself up from the floor.

"You can't hide it anymore, Dad," Chloe said, her voice steady and clear despite her exhaustion. "Detective Miller knows about the medical reports, and he knows why you and Eleanor were so eager to get rid of me tonight."

Before Marcus could lash out at her again, the heavy oak front door gave way with a resounding crash as the brass deadbolt was forced open by a battering ram. Detective Miller stepped into the grand foyer, flanked by two uniformed officers with their hands resting calmly on their service weapons. Miller was a tall, imposing man with sharp graying hair and an unrelenting gaze that immediately locked onto Marcus standing at the top of the curved staircase.

"Marcus Sterling, you and your wife Eleanor are under investigation for obstruction of justice and the suspicious death of your late wife, Elizabeth Sterling," Detective Miller announced, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings with absolute authority.

Eleanor rushed forward, her hands raised defensively as she forced a shaky, theatrical smile onto her face.

"Detective Miller, this is a complete misunderstanding!" Eleanor protested loudly, her voice pitched high with feigned outrage. "Our rebellious teenage daughter ran away and made up these wild, malicious lies because she refuses to accept our marriage!"

Miller didn’t even blink at her performance; instead, he pulled a folded piece of paper from his coat pocket and held it up for them to see.

"We received a priority data transfer from this residence less than five minutes ago containing authenticated medical logs and high-definition security footage," Miller replied coldly, stepping toward the stairs. "Officers, secure the house and detain Mr. and Mrs. Sterling for questioning."

Marcus’s eyes darted frantically toward the hallway where Chloe stood, a dark, calculating threat flashing in his gaze before the officers stepped between them.

"You think this is over, girl?" Marcus snarled quietly as the handcuffs clicked onto his wrists. "Your grandfather left secrets behind that will destroy this family long before any court date."
