Chapter 10 - The Encrypted Message

The buzzing phone screen illuminated the dark boardroom table with a harsh, glaring white light that immediately caught Detective Miller’s attention. Chloe stared down at the screen, her breath catching in her throat as she read the short, chilling text message displayed in bold black letters. If you ever want to see your mother's original medical autopsy report, come to the old boathouse at Lake Mercer alone in one hour. No police, no board members, or it goes into the shredder. Attached to the message was a single, crystal-clear photograph of a confidential coroner's file bearing the red stamp marked CONFIDENTIAL - CAUSE OF DEATH: ACUTE ORGANOPHOSPHATE POISONING.

Chloe’s hands shook as she slid the phone across the table toward Detective Miller so he could read the screen.

"It’s a trap," Miller said instantly, his tone flat and uncompromising as he slipped his hand toward his service holster. "Marcus must have a co-conspirator operating on the outside—likely Vance, the head of security who vanished from the estate right before we served the warrant."

"I don't care if it's a trap," Chloe whispered fiercely, standing up from her chair with absolute determination in her eyes. "That autopsy report is the only piece of physical evidence missing from the federal case. If they destroy it, Marcus and Eleanor might walk on a technicality during the trial next month."

"I cannot allow you to walk into an uncontained situation alone, Chloe," Miller insisted, shaking his head firmly. "We can trace the IP address of this message and deploy a tactical unit to surround the boathouse within the hour."

"If they see a single police cruiser within two miles of Lake Mercer, they will torch the building and every document inside it," Chloe argued, her voice rising with passionate urgency. "You taught me how to handle myself, Detective. Let me be the bait, and you and your team move in quietly through the woodline after I make contact."

Miller stared at her for a long, agonizing moment, weighing the immense legal risk against the fragile window of opportunity to lock away the conspirators for good.

"All right," Miller relented finally, handing her a small, discreet tactical tracking button disguised as a lapel pin. "Pin this inside your collar. Keep your phone's audio channel open to my direct line, and under no circumstances do you enter that building alone before my backup is in position."

Thirty minutes later, Chloe stepped out of a rented sedan at the edge of the foggy, mist-shrouded shores of Lake Mercer. The abandoned wooden boathouse loomed ahead like a skeletal monster rising out of the gray water, its weathered boards creaking ominously in the cold wind.

She took a deep, steadying breath, pressing the hidden tracking pin securely against the lapel of her navy blazer as she walked slowly toward the rotting dock.

As she pushed open the heavy wooden door of the boathouse, a familiar figure stepped out from the shadows holding a thick manila folder, wearing the black uniform of Vance Security.
