Chapter 2 - The Envelope in the Shadows

The heavy click of the sliding glass door locking from the inside sounded like a gunshot in the silent night. Chloe stumbled backward off the patio, her blue jeans damp from the dew-covered lawn as the bitter reality of her abandonment settled deep into her bones. She clutched her small white shoulder bag against her chest, her mind racing back to the fleeting glimpse she had caught inside the brightly lit kitchen just moments before. Sticking halfway out of Eleanor’s oversized leather tote bag on the marble island was a thick manila envelope stamped with the crimson seal of Harrison and Vance Probate Law. That was her mother’s family law firm, the very institution that was supposed to protect the vast estate her maternal grandfather had painstakingly built over decades.
Chloe crept silently across the flagstone patio, pressing her tear-streaked face against the cool, soundproof glass of the living room window to get a better look. Inside, Marcus poured himself a glass of amber scotch, his dark suit jacket draped casually over the back of a velvet armchair. Eleanor had discarded her hostile expression the moment the patio door locked, replaced now by a triumphant, conspiratorial smirk as she pulled the manila envelope entirely out of her bag. She slid a stack of heavy parchment papers across the mahogany dining table, tapping them with a long, painted fingernail while whispering something to Marcus that made him nod slowly in grim satisfaction.
"We just need her signature on the final quitclaim deed before she turns eighteen next month," Eleanor murmured, her voice carrying faintly through a small gap in the sliding door’s ventilation seal. "Once that paper is filed, every single cent of the trust fund becomes completely untraceable."
Chloe gasped softly, her hand flying to her mouth to stifle the sound as her blood ran ice-cold in her veins. Her mother’s sudden illness six months ago had never made any sense; the doctors had whispered about rapid-onset toxicity, but the police had closed the investigation before the autopsy reports were even fully finalized. Now, watching the two people she had trusted most divide up her birthright like spoils of war, a terrifying suspicion began to take root in her mind. They weren’t just stealing her home; they were erasing her entire existence, and they needed her out of the way permanently to finish the job.
Marcus picked up a silver fountain pen, swirling the ink slowly over the dotted line at the bottom of the page before pausing to look toward the dark hallway.
"Did you hear something outside the window just now?" Marcus asked, frowning deeply as he set the pen down on the table.
Eleanor scoffed, waving a dismissive hand while taking a long sip of wine from her crystal glass.
"It's just the wind rustling the oak trees, or maybe a stray neighborhood cat," Eleanor laughed coldly. "The girl is already halfway down the driveway, crying like the pathetic weakling she has always been."

Chloe backed away from the glass, her heart pounding furiously against her ribs as she realized she had less than an hour before they discovered she was still on the property. She needed shelter, but more importantly, she needed proof that could tear their carefully constructed web of lies apart.
