Chapter 6: The Hidden Ledger

Beneath a hollowed-out floorboard under the work table, Arthur discovered a metal box secured with a small combination lock. Recalling a date written on the margin of Eleanor's journal—Leo’s birthday—he entered the numbers. The lock clicked open.
Inside lay a thick leather ledger detailing illicit transactions, bank accounts, and shipping routes spanning across Europe. But alongside the financial records was a small cassette tape labeled For Dad.
Arthur’s hands trembled as he placed the tape into an old player on the desk and hit play. Eleanor’s voice filled the quiet room, clear and soft.

"Dad... if you're hearing this, it means I couldn't reach you in time. I'm sorry for leaving all those years ago. I was young and stubborn. But having Leo changed everything. I wanted him to grow up knowing what integrity means. I couldn't stay silent about what Victor Vane was doing. If they take me, use this ledger to protect Leo. Don't look for me if it puts him in danger."
Tears streamed down Arthur’s face. He wiped them away, a newfound resolve hardening his chest. "We are bringing her home," he said firmly.
