Chapter 1: The Locket of Memories

The silver medallion glinted beneath the soft Parisian streetlight, cool against the elderly man’s trembling palm. For Arthur, the image contained within the faded photograph was not merely a piece of paper; it was a ghost from a past he had spent two decades trying to bury. The young woman in the pale pink dress possessed eyes he would recognize anywhere—the eyes of his estranged daughter, Eleanor.

The boy, named Leo, knelt on the cobblestone pavement, his small knees scraped and trembling. Tears had carved clean streaks through the dust on his cheeks. "She said you were the only one who could help me," Leo whispered, his voice cracking with exhaustion and fear.

Arthur reached out, his hand hovering for a second before gently resting on the boy’s shoulder. The stern facade of the wealthy patriarch dissolved into something fragile. He gestured to the waiter, who stood rigid in disbelief, to fetch a glass of water and a warm blanket. "What happened to her, son? Start from the beginning," Arthur said softly, kneeling to be at eye level with his grandson.

Leo pointed a trembling finger across the street toward the idling black sedan. "A man in a dark coat came to our apartment last night. Mom hid me in the pantry. I heard her argument with him. Then she was gone. I’ve been running all morning... and that car has been following me." Before Arthur could look up, the sedan’s engine roared, its tires screeching against the asphalt as it sped into the Parisian traffic.
