Chapter 3: Clues in the Margins

Arthur took the journal gently, as if it were made of glass. The pages were filled with Eleanor’s familiar, elegant handwriting. As he flipped through the entries, the narrative of her life over the last decade unfolded before him—her struggles, her joys, and her quiet life as an art restorer in the Latin Quarter.

However, the final few pages contained erratic notes, dates, and names. Eleanor had discovered an illegal art smuggling ring operating through the gallery where she worked. She had documented evidence of valuable cultural artifacts being laundered out of France.

"The man in the dark coat," Arthur read aloud from an entry dated three days prior. "He knows I found the ledger. If I go missing, the key is at the old workshop."

Arthur realized that Eleanor hadn't been targeted because of a personal grudge or family history; she was in danger because she chose to do the right thing. The pride that had once estranged him from his daughter was replaced by a profound respect for her courage. He looked at Leo, whose eyes were heavy with sleep. "I failed your mother once, Leo," Arthur said quietly. "I will not fail her again."
