When the judge read the verdict, Evelyn finally broke. Her arrogant, wealthy facade completely collapsed into frantic, ugly sobbing as the bailiffs handcuffed her and led her away to begin a ten-year prison sentence.
Ryan felt no joy, no victory—only a profound, heavy relief. A massive weight had been lifted from his chest. The chapter was closed. As they walked out of the courthouse into the bright afternoon sun, Leo ran up to them, holding a small toy car. Ryan picked him up, spinning him around in the sunlight. The shadow was finally gone.
