Chapter 3: The Confession
The hospital room smelled of antiseptic and quiet despair. Sarah was treated for a mild concussion and severe facial trauma. When she finally woke, Ryan was sitting beside her, his eyes red and hollow from crying.
In a strained whisper, she finally told him the horrific truth. The pills weren't a desperate act of self-harm. Evelyn had tried to force them down her throat to sedate her. It happened after Sarah had physically blocked Evelyn from locking little Leo in a dark closet as ""punishment"" for spilling a drink. Evelyn had snapped, attacking Sarah with the heavy clipboard, leaving her bleeding on the floor.
Ryan wept silently, burying his face in her hands. The betrayal of his own flesh and blood was absolute. He realized the darkness of his mother’s soul had almost extinguished his entire world. He kissed Sarah's scarred knuckles, swearing an oath of protection.
