The detective sat across from Ryan in the bleak precinct room. Evelyn was facing serious charges of aggravated assault and child endangerment.
""She wants to see you,"" the detective said gently, reading Ryan's pained expression. ""She says she needs to explain.""

Ryan stood up, his jaw set, his posture rigid. ""Tell her she doesn't have a son anymore.""
He walked out of the precinct and into the crisp morning air. For the first time in his thirty years of life, he wasn't afraid of Evelyn's disapproval. He was a father and a husband first. The generational curse of abuse that had silently plagued his family tree was going to end with him, right here, right now. He blocked her number and walked back to his family.
