Chapter 2: Blue Lights and Sirens

The flashing lights of the ambulance painted the white kitchen walls in frantic hues of red and blue. Paramedics gently loaded Sarah onto a stretcher. Her grip on Ryan’s hand was iron-clad, terrified to let him go. Leo clung to Ryan's leg, his small body shaking with silent sobs.
Outside, police officers were handcuffing Evelyn. She was screaming obscenities, her mask of the 'perfect, wealthy matriarch' finally shattered for the entire neighborhood to witness.
Sitting in the back of the ambulance, Ryan looked at his wife and son. The guilt of leaving them alone with his mother while he went on a business trip gnawed at his soul like acid. He had known Evelyn was strict, even harsh, but he never imagined she was capable of this. He promised himself, as he watched Sarah’s eyes flutter shut in sheer exhaustion, that he would spend the rest of his life making this right.
