Chapter 9: The Psychologist's Testimony

The turning point of the trial was the testimony of Dr. Aris, a renowned child psychologist who had been working with Mia. He didn't speak in heavy medical jargon; he spoke of human fragility. ""Mia drew pictures of a black box,"" Dr. Aris told the jury, holding up a child's crayon drawing consisting entirely of frantic black scribbles. ""This is where she believes she lives now. The defendant didn't just leave her in a garage. She taught a six-year-old that she is disposable, that if she makes a mistake, the people who are supposed to love her will abandon her to the dark."" Several jurors wiped away tears. Clara reached out and squeezed David’s hand.
