Chapter 3: The Tape Don't Lie

David couldn't sleep. The image of Mia flinching at sudden noises tore at his soul. Driven by a desperate need for the truth, he drove to the upscale shopping center where the incident occurred and demanded the security footage, leveraging his corporate attorney credentials. What he saw broke him. The black-and-white monitor showed Beatrice pulling her luxury SUV into the cold, concrete garage. It showed little Mia unbuckling, dropping her favorite stuffed bunny outside the car. As Mia stepped out to grab it, the video showed Beatrice looking right at her in the rearview mirror, locking the doors, and driving away to make her dinner reservation. David watched his tiny daughter chase the car for a few steps before collapsing in the shadows. He sat in the security office and wept. The boy who loved his mother died in that chair; a father was born.
