Chapter 10: The Arrogance on the Stand

Against her lawyers' advice, Beatrice demanded to testify. Her narcissism convinced her she could charm the jury. Under cross-examination, she was asked a simple question: ""Why didn't you go back?"" Beatrice scoffed. ""The dinner was for a very important charity gala. I assumed she would wait by the car. She needs to learn independence."" The courtroom erupted in murmurs of disgust. The prosecutor stepped closer. ""Independence? She is six years old, ma'am. You didn't want to miss your soup course, so you left a child in freezing darkness."" Beatrice had no defense. Her own entitlement had dug her grave.
