Chapter 1: The Echo of the Slap

The sound of Clara’s hand connecting with Beatrice’s cheek echoed through the upscale restaurant like a gunshot. The clinking of silver and polite murmurs vanished, replaced by a suffocating silence. Beatrice, a woman who had worn her wealth and arrogance like armor for sixty years, touched her reddened face in pure shock. Clara didn’t flinch. She held her trembling six-year-old daughter, Mia, tighter against her chest. On the table, the smartphone continued to record. “Call the police,” Clara announced to the stunned room, her voice shaking but laced with steel. “Tell them a woman abandoned a child in a freezing parking garage for five hours.” Beatrice finally found her voice, screeching about assault and lawsuits, but the damage was done. The recording was saved, uploaded to the cloud, and safely locked away. Clara carried her sobbing daughter out into the night, knowing their lives would never be the same.
