Chapter 8: The Ultimatum

The silence in Marcus Vance’s study grew so dense that the ticking of the antique grandfather clock in the corner sounded like a hammer striking an anvil. Julian held his ground, his muscular frame planted firmly between Victoria and Clara, his dark eyes boring into his mother with unyielding defiance.
Marcus slowly stood up from behind his desk, leaning his weight onto his hands as he looked directly across at his estranged sister-in-law. His expression was a mix of pity and absolute contempt.
"You always believed that ownership gave you absolute dominion over human beings, Victoria," Marcus said quietly, his voice carrying the heavy weight of decades of family history. "You crushed my brother’s spirit, you alienated Julian from the day he was born, and you treat everyone around you like disposable chess pieces. But your time is up. The documents are already digitized, encrypted, and backed up on secure servers outside your reach. Filing the petition with the attorney general is just a formality now."
Victoria’s gaze flicked briefly to Marcus, a cold flash of pure hatred crossing her face. For a fraction of a second, her stoic armor cracked, revealing the frantic desperation of a tyrant realizing her iron grip was finally slipping. But she recovered instantly, smoothing the lapel of her grey jacket with chilling composure.
"You always were a sentimental fool, Marcus," Victoria sneered, her voice smooth and venomous. She shifted her dark eyes back to Julian, her lips tightening into a thin line. "And you, Julian... you are throwing away a multi-billion-dollar legacy for a girl who couldn't even afford a proper birthday cake. When the Vance Group stock collapses, when your little life here is unraveled by debt and public humiliation, don't come crawling back asking for mercy. Because you won't find any."
"We wouldn't take a single cent of your blood money if our lives depended on it," Clara stepped out from behind Julian, her voice steady, clear, and utterly devoid of fear. She met Victoria’s furious gaze head-on, her light brown eyes shining with quiet, unshakeable dignity. "You can keep your wealth, your high-rise towers, and your hollow status. What you will never understand, Victoria, is that true power doesn't come from controlling people through fear. It comes from love, integrity, and a clear conscience. Something you traded away a very long time ago."
Victoria flinched—just slightly, but enough for Clara and Julian to see it. The raw, unfiltered truth of those words struck a nerve deeper than any legal document or financial threat ever could. For a moment, the untouchable matriarch looked small, trapped inside the cold fortress of her own making.
Then, she turned sharply on her heel, signaling her two private security guards with a flick of her hand. "Come along," she commanded coldly over her shoulder. "We have a board meeting to prepare for. Let these fools play with their paper scraps."
As the heavy oak door clicked shut behind Victoria and her guards, the suffocating tension in the room finally began to dissipate. Marcus let out a long, slow breath, sinking back down into his leather chair with a faint, weary chuckle.
"Well," Marcus muttered, running a hand through his silver hair. "That certainly didn't lack dramatic flair. Remind me never to get on your wife’s bad side, Julian."

Julian smiled faintly, turning to look at Clara. The fear and anxiety from the morning were entirely gone from her face, replaced by a radiant, fierce resilience. He pulled her gently against his side, pressing a soft kiss into her light brown hair.
"She’s terrified," Julian said quietly, looking down at the documents on the desk. "She knows the foundation is crumbling. Now, let’s finish what we started."
