Chapter 5: The Estranged Uncle

Marcus Vance’s office on the twentieth floor of an older, art-deco financial building smelled of aged leather, pipe tobacco, and old money. Unlike the sterile, cold glass towers of the Vance Group headquarters, Marcus’s workspace felt like a gentleman's study, cluttered with rare books, historical maps, and framed black-and-white photographs of a bygone era.
Marcus, a distinguished man in his late sixties with silver hair and sharp, intelligent eyes that mirrored Julian’s, poured three glasses of sparkling water from a crystal decanter. He handed one to Clara and one to Julian, leaning back against his mahogany desk with a knowing, weary expression.
"Victoria has been busy this morning," Marcus noted dryly, taking a sip of his water. "The municipal library grant suspension is already the talk of the financial district. She’s using the foundation as a personal weapon again. She did the exact same thing to my late business partner thirty years ago when he tried to break away from the family conglomerate."
Julian set his glass down without drinking from it. "We aren't here to ask for sympathy, Uncle Marcus. We are here for leverage. Victoria thinks she can starve Clara out and force us to bend the knee. She’s operating like an empress protecting her throne, but empires fall from within."
Marcus studied his nephew closely, a faint smile of approval touching the corners of his mouth. "You've got your father’s stubborn streak, Julian, combined with a spine I haven't seen in this family for decades. But fighting Victoria head-on in court is a losing battle. She has teams of corporate attorneys retained permanently to bury anyone who crosses her."
"Then we don't fight her in court," Clara spoke up, her voice calm and steady, surprising even Julian with her composure. She stepped forward, placing a folder of historical documents she had brought from the archives onto Marcus’s desk. "We fight her where it hurts her most: her public legacy and the foundational legitimacy of the Vance Group’s original holdings."
Marcus raised an eyebrow, picking up the folder. "What is this?"
"Before I was furloughed, I was processing a collection of land grants and municipal deeds from the 1950s," Clara explained, her eyes sharp and focused. "Documents concerning the original acquisition of the properties where the Vance Group headquarters now stands. According to these public records, the land was originally deeded as a public trust for community development, not private commercial consolidation. The initial transfer papers bear irregularities that suggest corporate falsification during your grandfather’s era."

Marcus opened the folder, his eyes scanning the faded ink and official seals. As he read further, the color in his face shifted, a mixture of profound shock and dark realization dawning in his expression. "Good lord," Marcus whispered. "If these documents are verified and entered into the public record, the foundational deeds for the entire Vance corporate empire could be declared invalid. Victoria’s entire fortune is built on stolen public trust land."
Julian looked from Marcus to Clara, a grim, triumphant smile slowly spreading across his face. Victoria had spent her entire life using wealth and power to crush anyone who dared defy her, completely unaware that the very foundation she stood upon was built on sand. The war she had started with a smashed blue birthday cake was about to consume everything she held dear.
