Chapter 6: The Architect of Ruin

Back at her sprawling estate, Victoria Vance poured herself a glass of neat scotch, swirling the amber liquid as she stared out the floor-to-ceiling windows toward the infinity pool. The water was calm again, gleaming innocently under the afternoon sun, belying the stormy confrontation that had played out there less than twenty-four hours prior.

Her phone chimed on the marble countertop. She picked it up expecting a progress report from Arthur Sterling confirming that Clara was thoroughly demoralized by the library furlough. Instead, the screen displayed an urgent alert from the Vance Group’s corporate communications director: Rumors circulating in financial media regarding historical land title discrepancies involving our downtown headquarters site. Stock prices dipping in pre-market trading.

Victoria’s breath hitched. She slammed the scotch glass down so hard the crystal rim chipped, spilling liquor across the white marble. "Incompetent fools," she hissed to the empty room. How could a municipal library furlough trigger a land title investigation? Unless... Clara hadn't just been a quiet librarian organizing dusty books.

She immediately dialed Arthur Sterling’s direct line. It rang four times before picking up.

"Arthur, what is this nonsense about title discrepancies?" Victoria demanded, her voice razor-sharp. "Fix it immediately. Buy out whoever is talking, threaten them, do whatever it takes—"

"Victoria, I can't just buy this away," Arthur’s voice trembled slightly over the speaker, sounding genuinely panicked. "The documents were pulled from the municipal archives this morning by someone with high-level access. They’ve already been logged into the state registry for historical review. If the public trust claim gains traction, the corporation’s entire asset portfolio could be frozen pending an ownership audit."

"Who accessed the files?" Victoria’s voice dropped to a dangerous, icy whisper.

"According to the digital log... it was signed out under Clara Vance’s archival credentials before her suspension went into effect."

Silence hung heavily on the line. Victoria stared out at the pool, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the phone. She had underestimated Clara from the very beginning, dismissing her as a harmless, low-born distraction. But the girl was dangerous—methodical, intelligent, and fiercely loyal to Julian. By attempting to starve her out financially, Victoria had inadvertently driven her straight into the archives, handing her the exact weapon needed to dismantle the Vance dynasty.

"Listen to me very carefully, Arthur," Victoria commanded, regaining her composure through sheer force of will. "Mobilize our legal team immediately. I want an injunction filed against the state registry within the hour, claiming administrative error. And find out where Julian and Clara are right now."

"They aren't at home, Victoria," Arthur replied grimly. "Our surveillance team reports their car was spotted entering Marcus Vance’s private office building downtown two hours ago."

Victoria’s blood ran cold. Marcus. Of course. The bitter, exiled uncle who had been nursing a thirty-year grudge against the family empire. If Julian and Marcus had joined forces with Clara’s historical documentation, this wasn't just a family feud anymore; it was an all-out corporate coup.

Victoria straightened her shoulders, her dark eyes narrowing with ruthless resolve. She had built this empire from the ashes of her father’s legacy, and she would burn it to the ground before she let a penniless librarian and a traitorous nephew rip it away from her. She grabbed her designer leather handbag, strode purposefully out of the grand living room, and headed for her car. The war had escalated, and she intended to strike back with finality.
