Chapter 10: The Midnight Boardroom

The executive boardroom of the Vance Group was bathed in the harsh, artificial glow of recessed overhead lighting long after midnight. Outside the forty-story glass windows, the city skyline glittered like a distant constellation, but inside the room, the mood was funereal.
Victoria Vance sat rigidly at the head of the mahogany table. Surrounding her were the remaining members of the board of directors and senior legal counsel Arthur Sterling, all staring grimly at the state injunction notice laid out flat on the polished wood surface.
"An asset freeze," Arthur whispered, his voice trembling slightly as he removed his glasses and rubbed his eyes in utter exhaustion. "The Attorney General’s office has officially accepted the petition regarding the 1950s municipal trust deeds. All commercial holdings, bank accounts, and corporate real estate portfolios tied to the original acquisition are legally frozen effective 8:00 AM."
A heavy, suffocating silence settled over the room. For decades, the Vance Group had operated like an untouchable royal dynasty, weathering financial downturns and political shifts through sheer aggression and unyielding legal intimidation. Now, their entire empire was crumbling from a single archival file unearthed by a quiet librarian in a municipal basement.
"There must be a loophole," one of the junior board members stammered, sweating profusely under his collar. "Can’t we file an emergency countersuit? Claim judicial overreach?"
"On what grounds?" Victoria’s voice cut through the panic like broken glass. She didn't raise her voice, but the sheer coldness in her tone silenced the room instantly. She stood up slowly from her chair, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling glass wall, staring out at the city she had spent her entire life trying to conquer. "The documents are authentic. Our predecessors cut corners six decades ago, assuming no one would ever dig deep enough to find the original public trust clauses. Julian and his little wife didn't just stumble upon this—they laid a trap, and we walked right into it."
Arthur looked up at her, hesitant. "Victoria... what do we do? If the state audit proceeds, the public trust violation will invalidate our corporate charter entirely. We’ll lose everything."
Victoria turned slowly to face them, her expression a mask of chilling, calculated resolve. The initial shock had vanished, replaced by the dangerous survival instincts of a cornered predator. She wasn't going to surrender quietly. If the empire was going down, she intended to ensure everyone responsible went down with it.
"We don't fight the injunction in court," Victoria stated quietly, her dark eyes narrowing with malicious intent. "We settle. But on our terms."
Arthur blinked in confusion. "Settle? How can we settle when the state holds all the evidence?"
"By cutting off the head of the snake," Victoria replied smoothly, walking back toward the table and resting her knuckles against the mahogany surface. "Julian thinks he’s invincible because he has Marcus and a box of old papers. But Julian has a weak spot. Clara. If we strike at her reputation, her personal security, and her emotional foundation, Julian will come begging us for a quiet settlement to protect her."

The board members exchanged uneasy glances, realizing the dark, retaliatory path their matriarch was proposing. But fear of ruin proved stronger than moral conscience. No one spoke up to object.
Victoria pulled her phone from her pocket, her polished fingernail tapping out a quick message to a private investigator she hadn't utilized in years. The war was entering its final, dirtiest phase, and Victoria intended to show no mercy whatsoever.
