Chapter 5

"Mrs. Vance," Arthur began, his voice carrying an icy composure that sent a visible shiver down Evelyn's spine. "You have spent the last ten minutes attempting to manage your public image rather than showing genuine remorse for terrifying my daughter. That calculation speaks volumes about your character." Evelyn’s face drained of color, leaving her makeup looking harsh against her pale skin. "Mr. Sterling, please, I assure you—" "Silence," Arthur commanded, a single word delivered with enough gravitational pull to stop Evelyn mid-sentence. He adjusted his cuffs, his gaze never leaving her terrified eyes. "You will leave this hotel immediately. Your invitation to all future Sterling-backed philanthropic events is permanently revoked."

The public relations consultant standing near the edge of the hallway gasped softly, realizing the catastrophic scale of the professional exile Evelyn had just incurred. Arthur turned his attention briefly to the hotel security manager. "David, ensure Mrs. Vance is escorted to her vehicle without further disruption to our guests. If she attempts to re-enter these premises, have her removed by the local authorities." David nodded respectfully, gesturing toward the main elevator bank. "Right away, Mr. Sterling." Evelyn stared at Arthur in sheer disbelief, her social standing evaporating before her eyes. She turned sharply on her heel and retreated down the corridor, her hurried footsteps echoing miserably against the floor.

Julianne watched Evelyn disappear around the corner before letting out a soft sigh, her shoulders relaxing slightly. She turned back to Arthur, her expression softening. "Do you think she understands the gravity of what happened, or is she only mourning her invitation list?" Arthur offered a dry, humorless smile, stepping back toward the doorway of the private parlor. "People like Evelyn do not mourn their actions; they only mourn their lost privileges. But she will not bother us again tonight." They re-entered the suite, ensuring the heavy door clicked softly shut behind them, sealing out the noise and hypocrisy of the world outside.

Inside, Clara was still sleeping soundly, the small crisis of the evening fading into a distant memory. Julianne walked over to the sofa, gently brushing a soft brown curl from the child's cheek. "She is remarkably resilient," Julianne whispered, her voice laced with deep affection. Arthur poured himself a glass of sparkling water from the mahogany sideboard, taking a slow sip before joining Julianne by the sofa. "She gets that from her mother," Arthur said softly, his eyes meeting Julianne's with a lingering intensity that carried years of shared history and unspoken devotion. The warmth between them filled the room, casting away the cold shadows of the gala outside.

As the grandfather clock in the corner chimed the hour, Julianne checked her diamond wristwatch. "The board meeting tomorrow morning at the foundation is going to require our full attention, Arthur, especially with the new architectural proposals coming in." Arthur nodded, setting his glass down on the side table. "Everything is prepared. Our focus tonight, however, remains entirely right here." They settled into the armchairs across from the sofa, keeping a quiet, watchful vigil over the sleeping child, ensuring that the rest of Clara's evening would remain undisturbed, safe within the unyielding fortress of their protection.
