Chapter 10

By late evening, the storm had cleared, leaving the air crisp and washed clean as the Sterling motorcade drove through the wrought-iron gates of their private estate on the outskirts of the city. The grand brick manor stood bathed in soft architectural lighting, surrounded by meticulously manicured gardens and ancient oak trees. Inside, the atmosphere was warm and tranquil. Clara was already fast asleep in her nursery upstairs, tucked safely beneath her favorite quilt, her small velvet box containing her lost tooth resting safely on her nightstand. Arthur and Julianne walked through the grand foyer, shedding their coats and stepping into the expansive walnut-paneled library.

The room smelled of old leather, polished mahogany, and burning cedar from the stone fireplace. Julianne poured two glasses of aged bourbon, handing one to Arthur before settling into a deep leather armchair by the fire. Arthur took a slow sip, letting the warmth spread through him before setting the glass on the marble hearth. "Clara asked about her tooth again before she fell asleep," Julianne said with a gentle, affectionate smile. "She is convinced the tooth fairy is going to leave her a gold star tonight." Arthur chuckled softly, leaning against the mantelpiece. "We will ensure her expectations are properly met. A gold star and perhaps a trip to the botanical gardens tomorrow afternoon."

Julianne’s smile softened, though a shadow of lingering tension remained in her eyes. "Do you think Richard will escalate his tactics now that our legal team has flagged his shell companies?" Arthur shook his head slowly, staring into the flickering flames. "Richard is a coward who relies on proxies and shadow companies. Once the regulatory commission freezes his assets, he will be too busy fighting his own legal fires to bother with us." Julianne took a sip of her drink, gazing into the fire. "It is terrifying, in a way, how quickly an ordinary moment—like a little girl losing a tooth at a gala—can be exploited by people with malicious agendas."

"That is why we never lower our guard," Arthur said quietly, stepping over to stand behind Julianne’s chair. He placed his hands gently on her shoulders, kneading the tension from her muscles with practiced ease. "The world outside is noisy, competitive, and often cruel. But inside these walls, and wherever we are together, Clara is safe. We ensure that." Julianne leaned back against his touch, closing her eyes as a deep sense of peace washed over her. The threats of corporate rivals and social climbers felt distant and insignificant compared to the quiet sanctuary they had built for their daughter.

Suddenly, the soft chime of the secure intercom on the library desk broke the silence. Arthur stepped away from the chair and pressed the receiver. It was the head of estate security at the front gates. "Mr. Sterling, apologies for the late interruption. We have a visitor at the outer security gate. It’s Marcus Vance. He insists on speaking with you personally. He says it’s an emergency regarding Richard Sterling." Arthur exchanged a brief, calculating glance with Julianne. "Let him through to the east conservatory, David. Do not let him near the main house. I will meet him there in five minutes."
