Chapter 2

Julianne held Clara close, shielding the little girl's face from the staring crowd of wealthy onlookers. Her beige dress brushed against the sticky juice and dangerous glass fragments, but she did not care. With steady, practiced hands, Julianne examined Clara's mouth, gently wiping the small trace of blood from the child's chin with a clean silk handkerchief she pulled from her evening clutch. "You are safe, sweetheart. I've got you," Julianne murmured, her voice a calm anchor against the rising tide of panic. Evelyn stood awkwardly nearby, her silver gown catching the harsh glare of the overhead spotlights as she realized the collective gaze of the room had shifted entirely onto her clumsy mistake.
Before Evelyn could muster an apology or a defensive retort, Julianne rose smoothly to her feet, still keeping Clara safely cradled against her hip. Julianne’s eyes, cold and unflinching, locked onto Evelyn. Without a word of polite diplomacy, Julianne stepped directly into Evelyn’s personal space, her posture rigid with righteous indignation. Evelyn bristled, opening her mouth to speak, but the heavy oak double doors at the back of the grand ballroom groaned open with a slow, deliberate finality. The murmur of the gala died down instantly, replaced by a tense, suffocating silence that swept through the room like a cold winter draft.
A tall, distinguished man with silver hair and a meticulously trimmed mustache stepped through the threshold. He wore a sharply tailored dark green suit that commanded immediate authority. Flanked by two imposing bodyguards in matching dark suits, Arthur Sterling walked with measured, unhurried strides. His piercing gaze swept over the opulent room before locking instantly onto the center of the disturbance. His eyes caught the broken glass, the spilled juice, the small spot of blood on the marble, and most importantly, the tear-stained face of little Clara resting against Julianne's shoulder. Arthur’s face hardened into an expression of absolute, unyielding fury.

The crowd parted instinctively, whispering nervously as the patriarch of the Sterling family approached. Arthur did not look at the wealthy socialites trying to catch his eye; his entire focus remained locked on his daughter. When he reached the small circle, he stopped. His breathing was calm, but the muscle in his jaw ticked with barely suppressed rage. Evelyn shrank back half a step under the crushing weight of his stare, realizing too late whose event this was and whose family she had just upended. The air grew heavy with anticipation as Arthur's eyes shifted from Clara to Evelyn, his voice cutting through the silent room like a blade.
Arthur’s words were quiet, yet they echoed clearly in the vast acoustics of the ballroom. "Hands off my daughter." The declaration was absolute. The silence that followed was deafening. Julianne offered a subtle, reassuring nod to Arthur, silently communicating that Clara, aside from a minor scare and a missing tooth, was physically unharmed. Evelyn swallowed hard, her mouth opening and closing as she searched for words to excuse her carelessness, but the terrifying reality of the situation had finally set in. Arthur did not wait for excuses. He stepped forward, gently lifting Clara from Julianne's arms and holding his child securely against his dark green lapel, completely ignoring the social protocols of the elite gathering.
