Chapter 4

While Clara slept peacefully in the quiet sanctuary of the VIP parlor, the tension outside in the main corridor was far from resolved. Evelyn Vance paced nervously across the imported Persian runner, her silver heels clicking a frantic rhythm against the wool. Her elaborate hairstyle, usually flawless, had begun to fray slightly at the temples, matching her unraveling composure. Standing a few paces away were two hotel security managers and a public relations consultant she had hurriedly summoned. Evelyn was acutely aware that offending Arthur Sterling was social suicide in this city. His influence spanned real estate, media, and finance, and crossing him was a luxury no one survived for long.

"You need to let me speak with him, David," Evelyn insisted, fixing her gaze on the senior security manager, a portly man whose expression was carved from pure anxiety. "It was an accident. I didn't see the child. People shouldn't let toddlers wander around high-end galas unattended." David sighed, shaking his head slowly. "Mrs. Vance, Mr. Sterling does not take kindly to people who endanger his family. Furthermore, Miss Clara was seated quietly at her designated table, entirely out of the main walkway, until your hurried shortcut brought you directly into her space." Evelyn flushed with indignation, opening her mouth to argue, but the hallway doors clicked open.

Julianne stepped out into the corridor, pulling the heavy mahogany door shut behind her with deliberate softness to ensure Clara remained undisturbed. She stood in the doorway, her off-shoulder beige dress catching the hall lights as she regarded Evelyn with a cool, detached indifference. Evelyn rushed forward, her hands raised in a conciliatory gesture. "Julianne, please. You know how these large events are. It was purely unintentional. I want to apologize to Arthur—to Mr. Sterling—and check on the little girl." Julianne did not move an inch, effectively blocking the entrance to the suite. Her posture remained impeccably straight, her eyes narrowing slightly as she took in Evelyn’s frantic demeanor.

"Apologize to a five-year-old child whom you nearly trampled, Evelyn?" Julianne’s voice was low, smooth, and laced with quiet steel. "Or are you simply terrified of the professional and social consequences that are about to rain down upon you?" Evelyn swallowed hard, the mask of high-society poise slipping entirely. "Be reasonable, Julianne. We run in the same circles. A mistake shouldn't ruin years of—" "A mistake is spilling a glass of wine," Julianne interrupted coldly. "Ignoring your surroundings, plowing through a child, shattering glass, and leaving her bleeding on the floor while you stood there paralyzed by your own vanity is negligence. And Arthur has zero tolerance for negligence."

Before Evelyn could manufacture a defense, the door behind Julianne opened further. Arthur Sterling stepped out into the hallway, towering over both women. His dark green suit was immaculate, and his silver mustache twitched slightly as he looked down at Evelyn with chilling neutrality. The air in the hallway seemed to drop ten degrees. Evelyn froze, the words dying in her throat as she met the full force of Arthur's gaze. The bodyguards standing a few feet away shifted their weight in unison, creating an impenetrable wall. Arthur did not raise his voice; he spoke with the quiet, devastating finality of a judge passing down an irrevocable sentence.
