Chapter 1

The grand ballroom of the Astoria Hotel hummed with the quiet, calculated murmurs of high society. Crystal chandeliers cascaded warm light over marble floors, reflecting the expensive silk and tailored wool of the city's elite. Amidst the sea of towering adults, five-year-old Clara sat alone at the edge of a mahogany table. Her wavy brown hair, pinned back with a simple red clip, caught the amber light. She wore a pristine blue party dress that puffed slightly around her knees, and her small hands carefully cradled a delicate glass of apple juice. Her dark eyes mirrored a profound, quiet sadness that felt far too heavy for someone so small. Just moments ago, a dull ache in her lower jaw had drawn her attention, and when she probed it with her tongue, the inevitable had happened. Her very first baby tooth had come loose.
Unfamiliar with the sensation and feeling suddenly vulnerable in the overwhelming crowd, Clara had quietly panicked. Before she could find her mother or father, the chaotic rhythm of the gala disrupted her solitude. Evelyn Vance, a towering forty-year-old woman draped in a sparkling silver backless gown, swept past the table with hurried arrogance. Her glittering fabric caught Clara’s elbow. The impact was sudden and sharp. Clara’s grip failed, and the heavy glass slipped from her small fingers, crashing violently against the cold marble floor. Shards of crystal scattered like jagged diamonds, accompanied by a bright, sticky splash of amber juice.

Clara gasped, her hand instantly flying to her mouth. The physical jolt of the collision, combined with the sudden shock, dislodged the loose tooth entirely. Tears welled in her eyes, spilling over her long lashes. She slid from her chair, landing hard on her knees amidst the broken glass. When she pulled her hand away, a tiny spot of bright crimson blood stained her palm, right beside her lost tooth, which rested innocently among the jagged shards of glass. The sharp sting in her gum was nothing compared to the overwhelming humiliation and fright that gripped her chest. She let out a soft, broken sob, curling inward as the glittering world around her momentarily froze.
Evelyn stopped dead in her tracks, her heels clicking to a halt as she registered the commotion. A flicker of annoyance crossed her sculpted features before calculated social awareness took over. Just yards away, Julianne Moore, dressed in an off-shoulder beige evening dress, reacted instantly. Julianne’s maternal instincts bypassed the social hierarchy of the room. She rushed forward, her face tightening with protective fury. Ignoring Evelyn completely for the moment, Julianne dropped gracefully to her knees on the hard marble, paying no heed to the glass risk, and pulled the sobbing little girl into her arms, whispering soothing, gentle reassurances against Clara's soft brown hair.
