Chapter 9: Flight Through the Timber

Outside, the cool autumn air hit Clara’s face like a physical blow as she dragged Leo through the back screen door and plunged directly into the thick underbrush of the surrounding woods. Brambles tore at the hem of her clothes, and low-hanging branches whipped against her arms, but she refused to slow down. She could hear the muffled sounds of the struggle echoing from inside the farmhouse, followed by shouts and the splintering of furniture.
""Faster, Leo, sweetie, keep running!"" she urged, her lungs burning with every inhalation as she guided the boy through a dense patch of ferns.
Leo was crying softly, his small sneakers slipping on the damp moss, but his survival instincts kicked in and he pumped his legs with all his might. They scrambled down a steep, muddy embankment, splashing directly through the freezing, ankle-deep water of a narrow creek that wound its way through the valley.
Clara knew they couldn't stay on the open banks; the security agents would easily spot their footprints in the soft mud. She pulled Leo into the hollow cavity beneath the massive root system of an ancient weeping willow that overhung the watercourse. The heavy curtain of trailing green vines completely obscured the opening from view.
""Sit right here, honey,"" Clara whispered frantically, pressing her hands against Leo’s shoulders to keep him down. ""Be completely silent. Don't make a single sound, no matter what you hear.""
""Are they going to take us back to the big house?"" Leo whispered, his lower lip quivering uncontrollably.
""Never,"" Clara said with fierce determination, her eyes burning with unshed tears. ""I would die first.""

Above them, the heavy thud of running boots vibrated through the damp earth. A flashlight beam cut through the canopy of leaves, slicing back and forth across the creek bank. One of the security agents shouted instructions to his partner upstream, their voices carrying clearly over the gentle babble of the water.
Clara held her breath, wrapping her arms around Leo and pressing her face against his messy brown hair. Every instinct in her body screamed to run, but stillness was their only weapon now. She stared fixedly at the churning water of the creek, praying that Julian was holding his ground inside the besieged house.
