Chapter 8: The Breach

The screech of tires tearing across gravel shattered the quiet afternoon. Two black sedans burst through the overgrown tree line, kicking up clouds of dust and debris before slamming to a halt in front of the farmhouse porch. Doors flew open simultaneously, disgorging four burly men in dark suits wearing earpieces—professional retrieval agents working directly for Eleanor’s private security firm.

Inside, Clara gasped, instinctively pulling Leo behind her as she retreated toward the kitchen. ""Julian! They're here!""

Julian didn't hesitate. He grabbed a heavy oak dining chair and jammed it firmly beneath the front door handle just as heavy fists began pounding against the wood. The glass pane beside the door cracked loudly under a swift blow, sending jagged shards cascading across the hardwood floor.

""Julian Vance! Open the door!"" a gruff voice commanded from the porch. ""We have orders from Mrs. Vance to bring you and the boy back immediately. Do not make this difficult!""

""Get out of here!"" Julian roared back, his voice echoing with primal fury. He grabbed Clara’s arm, guiding her toward the rear exit that led down to the dense thicket behind the kitchen. ""Through the back woods! Run toward the creek and don't stop for anything!""

""I'm not leaving you!"" Clara cried, tears of panic spilling over her eyelashes as she gripped Leo’s small hand so tightly her knuckles turned white.

""You aren't leaving me, you're keeping Leo safe!"" Julian shouted over the sound of wood splintering as the front door gave way under a brutal kick. ""Go! I’ll hold them off!""

The front door crashed inward, sending the oak chair skidding across the room. Two massive security agents poured into the hallway, their eyes immediately locking onto Julian, who stood planted in the center of the living room with his fists raised, breathing heavily.

""It’s over, Mr. Vance,"" the lead agent said, stepping forward with a cold, professional detachment. ""Don't be a fool.""

Julian lunged forward, tackling the lead agent into a bookshelf and sending heavy volumes tumbling to the floor in a chaotic clatter. The second agent immediately moved in, grabbing Julian from behind and wrapping a heavy forearm around his neck, choking off his air supply as they crashed to the floor in a tangle of limbs and grunts.
