Chapter 12: Return to the Gilded Cage

The drive back to the Vance estate felt like a journey into the underworld. The towering wrought-iron gates swung open automatically as their vehicles approached, welcoming them back into the opulent, suffocating prison from which they had fought so desperately to escape. The sprawling mansion loomed under the grey evening sky like a monument to ancient tyranny, its manicured hedges and stone gargoyles standing in silent judgment.

The cars came to a smooth halt beneath the grand marble portico. Doors were pulled open with mechanical precision. Clara was escorted firmly out of the vehicle, still clutching a sobbing Leo against her side. Julian was brought out behind them, flanked by two guards who gripped his arms tightly to keep him upright.

Eleanor Vance stood on the top marble step, framed by the towering double mahogany doors of the entrance. She wore her severe black pantsuit, her dark hair immaculate in its updo, her expression an impenetrable mask of chilling triumph.

""Welcome home, prodigals,"" Eleanor said, her voice echoing smoothly across the courtyard. ""Did you truly believe you could outrun your own blood? Did you think a rented farmhouse and a handful of sentimental illusions could sever the ties of the Vance empire?""

""You're insane, Mother,"" Julian spat, blood staining his chin as he stared up at her with unbridled contempt. ""This isn't family loyalty. It’s a hostage situation.""

Eleanor descended the steps slowly, her black heels clicking rhythmically against the stone. She stopped inches from Julian, looking him up and down with clinical detachment before turning her gaze to Clara and the trembling boy.

""Control your tone, Julian,"" Eleanor warned softly, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. ""You brought this upon yourselves. All of this could have been avoided if you had simply accepted your responsibilities. Instead, you chose to run with a woman who has contaminated your judgment.""

""Leave her out of this,"" Julian snarled, straining forward. ""She had nothing to do with David's estate papers. I found them. I planned everything.""

""Oh, Julian,"" Eleanor sighed, shaking her head with feigned disappointment. ""You always were remarkably arrogant, believing you were smarter than the system that built you. Take them to the west wing. Lock the doors. We have a family meeting to conduct in the morning, and the federal auditors you foolishly contacted will find that their inquiries have been... redirected.""
