Chapter 5: Shadows at the Lake

The old farmhouse loomed out of the darkness like a forgotten relic of a simpler era. Weathered grey wood siding creaked in the midnight breeze, and overgrown ivy clawed at the window frames. Yet, as Julian unlocked the heavy front door and pushed it open, a wave of dusty, dry air greeted them like an old friend. It was rustic, unpretentious, and utterly devoid of the oppressive luxury that had defined Julian’s existence at the estate.

Clara carried Leo inside, laying him gently down on a floral-patterned sofa in the living room while Julian flicked on the wall switches, illuminating the warm, amber glow of vintage lamps. The house was surprisingly well-preserved; utilities had been maintained through an automated account Julian secretly funded for years, anticipating a day like today.

""It’s not the grand ballroom,"" Julian said, offering a tired, apologetic smile as he set their minimal luggage by the entryway. ""But it’s ours.""

""It’s a palace compared to where we just came from,"" Clara replied, sinking into an armchair with a soft sigh. She rubbed her tired eyes, feeling the sheer exhaustion of a wedding day that had morphed into a desperate escape. ""I’ll make some tea. Is there anything in the kitchen?""

""There should be staples—coffee, tea, canned goods. I had the caretaker stock it last week just in case."" Julian walked over to the window, peering out into the dense woods that surrounded the property. The moon was obscured by thick clouds, casting long, menacing shadows across the overgrown lawn. ""I’m going to check the perimeter. Lock the door behind me and don't open it for anyone unless you hear my specific knock—three short taps, then two long.""

The next three hours passed in a tense, agonizing vigil. While Leo slept soundly, oblivious to the tectonic shifts in his young life, Clara and Julian organized the small pantry and assessed the supplies. Julian spent an hour securing the window latches and setting up a makeshift security monitor linked to the driveway cameras he had hastily installed.

By 3:00 AM, the adrenaline had completely faded, leaving them sitting side-by-side on the worn wooden floorboards of the kitchen, sharing a mug of instant coffee.

""We have to contact a lawyer,"" Clara said, staring into the dark liquid of the mug. ""Someone independent, outside of the city jurisdiction where Eleanor’s influence reaches.""

""I have a contact in Boston,"" Julian replied, resting his chin on his knees. ""Marcus’s cousin. She specializes in corporate fraud and estate misappropriation. I’ll call her on a burner phone as soon as the sun comes up.""
