Chapter 13: The Final Ledger

Locked inside the heavily fortified west wing suite, the silence was broken only by Leo’s exhausted breathing as he finally fell asleep on the velvet settee, worn out by hours of terror and exhaustion. Clara sat on the edge of the mahogany bed, staring blankly at the ornate wallpaper, her hands still trembling from the ordeal in the woods.
Julian paced the length of the room, ignoring the throbbing pain in his ribs and the dried blood on his face. He checked the heavy oak door; as expected, it was deadbolted from the outside, guarded by at least two of Eleanor’s private security men.
""She thinks she's won,"" Julian muttered, running a hand through his hair. ""She thinks locking us in here erases the subpoena.""
""Did Sarah Miller receive the files before the raid?"" Clara asked quietly, looking up from the settee.
Julian stopped pacing, a grim smile touching the corner of his bruised lips. ""Before we left the farmhouse, I uploaded the digital backups of David’s financial records directly to an encrypted cloud server, set with a dead-man’s switch. If Sarah doesn't receive my security ping by noon tomorrow, the entire cache—including the internal memos proving Eleanor engineered the brake failure on David’s car—automatically transmits to the federal prosecutor's office in Washington.""
Clara’s breath hitched. ""A dead-man’s switch? Julian, why didn't you tell me?""
""Because the less you knew, the safer you were if they caught us,"" Julian replied, walking over and kneeling beside her, taking her cold hands in his. ""I needed to make sure that even if they broke us, the truth would still come out.""
""So all we have to do is survive until noon tomorrow,"" Clara whispered, her eyes searching his face.
May you like
""Just twelve more hours,"" Julian confirmed, pressing a gentle kiss to her knuckles. ""And then her empire of glass comes crashing down.""
They spent the remaining hours of the night sitting together on the floor beside the settee, watching over Leo, speaking in low, steady whispers about a future where they wouldn't have to look over their shoulders anymore. The oppressive weight of the Vance estate seemed to press down on the roof, but inside their small circle, a fierce, unbreakable warmth held the darkness at bay.
