Chapter 14: Dawn of Reckoning

The grandfather clock in the main hallway struck eleven times, its deep, resonant gongs echoing through the cavernous corridors of the mansion. Inside the west wing suite, Julian and Clara sat in quiet anticipation, watching the digital clock display on Clara’s phone as the minutes ticked slowly toward noon.
Suddenly, the heavy deadbolt on the exterior door clicked loudly. The door swung open to reveal Eleanor Vance, flanked by two bewildered-looking corporate lawyers and a pair of local police officers whose expressions shifted from authoritative to deeply unsettled.
Eleanor stepped into the room, her usual composure showing the first faint cracks of genuine panic. Her eyes darted from Julian’s bruised face to Clara, and finally to the phone in Clara's hand.
""Julian, this farce has gone far enough,"" Eleanor demanded, her voice losing its icy polish, replaced by a frantic edge. ""Call off your attorneys. The federal investigators are downstairs, and they are asking absurd questions about corporate fraud and vehicle tampering.""
Julian stood up slowly, towering over his mother with a stern, unyielding expression. He didn't flinch, nor did he raise his voice. He simply looked her dead in the eye.
""They aren't asking absurd questions, Mother,"" Julian replied steadily. ""They're asking the right ones. The dead-man’s switch executed three minutes ago. Every financial record, every offshore transfer, and every internal memo regarding David’s car is currently sitting on the federal prosecutor's desk.""
One of the local police officers stepped forward, pulling a pair of cold steel handcuffs from his belt loop. He looked at Eleanor with grim professional distaste.
""Eleanor Vance, you are being detained for questioning regarding corporate embezzlement, obstruction of justice, and the unlawful death of David Vance. Turn around and place your hands behind your back.""
Eleanor recoiled as if struck physically, her face draining of all color. She looked desperately at the corporate lawyers who had accompanied her, but both men were already backing out of the doorway, distancing themselves completely from her sinking ship.

""You wouldn't do this to your own mother,"" Eleanor whispered, her voice cracking with sudden, helpless fragility as the officer grabbed her arm.
""You stopped being a mother a very long time ago,"" Julian said quietly.
