Chapter 9: A Hidden Wooden Box

On Friday morning, Jax took Leo up to his small cabin on Pine Ridge to finish cleaning and prepping the place for their new life together. The cabin was rustic, surrounded by tall pine trees and overlooking a quiet creek.
While Jax was sweeping the porch, Leo wandered into the small storage loft upstairs. A few minutes later, the boy came down the stairs carrying a dusty, hand-carved wooden box.
""Jax, I found this under the bed,"" Leo said, setting it carefully on the kitchen table.
Jax paused, his heart skipping a beat. He recognized that box. It was the memory chest Sarah had kept when they were teenagers. He blew the dust off the lid and carefully lifted the latch.
Inside were small pieces of a life he thought was forgotten: old movie ticket stubs, pressed wildflowers, a silver ring he had given her on her eighteenth birthday, and a stack of unmailed letters written in Sarah's neat cursive.
Leo reached in and pulled out a small Polaroid photograph. It showed a younger Jax, smiling broadly without his thick beard, holding a newborn baby wrapped in a yellow blanket. On the back, written in blue ink, were the words: “Our miracle, Leo. Born May 14th.”
Leo’s eyes widened. ""Is that... me?""
Jax sat down heavily on a wooden chair, his eyes brimming with quiet tears. ""Yeah, buddy. That’s you. The day you were born.""

""She kept this whole box for me?"" Leo asked softly.
""She kept it because she never stopped loving us,"" Jax said, gently pulling Leo onto his lap. ""And now it belongs to you.""
