Chapter 8: Whispers in the Small Town

By mid-week, word had fully spread throughout Oak Creek that Jax—the town's notorious lone biker—was raising an eight-year-old boy. Standing outside the local grocery store with a basket full of milk, fresh fruit, and cereal, Jax could feel the staring eyes of the locals.

Two women near the bakery aisle whispered to each other, shooting doubtful looks at Jax's leather vest and heavy boots.

""Can a man like that really raise a child?"" one whispered loud enough for the aisle to hear.

Jax froze, clutching the cereal box in his hand. Before he could speak, Leo tugged on the hem of his vest.

""Jax, look! They have the chocolate ones!"" Leo said excitedly, holding up a box of cereal with a bright cartoon mascot.

Jax squeezed his eyes shut, exhaling slowly to push down his rising temper. He looked down at Leo’s bright, innocent face and softened immediately. ""Put two boxes in the basket, kiddo.""

As they walked toward the checkout lane, Clara stepped in line behind them, carrying a loaf of bread. She glared sharply at the two gossiping women until they quickly turned away in embarrassment.

""Don't let them get to you, Jax,"" Clara said loudly enough for the whole store to hear. ""A real father isn't defined by what he wears. It’s defined by how he shows up when it matters.""

Jax looked at Clara and gave a quiet nod of gratitude. Leo grinned, holding his chocolate cereal like a trophy.

""We're a team, right Jax?"" Leo asked, reaching up to grab Jax’s thumb.

""Yeah, Leo,"" Jax replied, looking around the store with his head held high. ""We're a team.""
