Chapter 15: Home on the Horizon

Six months later, summer had returned to Oak Creek. The valley was alive with blooming wildflowers, clear blue skies, and the fresh scent of mountain pine.
Jax stood on the front porch of the cabin, holding a cup of hot coffee as the morning sun rose over the mountains. Down by the driveway, Leo was riding his new bicycle, making sharp turns and laughing as he chased the neighbor’s friendly golden retriever.
Jax walked down the wooden steps, crouching beside the driveway as Leo brought his bike to a smooth stop right in front of him.
""Look Jax! No training wheels!"" Leo cheered, wiping a drop of sweat from his forehead.
""I saw that, buddy! You're getting fast,"" Jax said, proudly slapping the boy’s shoulder.
Leo leaned his bicycle against a tree and looked up at Jax, his hazel eyes clear, happy, and filled with complete security. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the old faded photograph—the one he had carried on the bus months ago.
""What are you doing with that old picture?"" Jax asked softly.
Leo walked over to the wooden porch post, where a small glass frame hung near the front door. He carefully placed the old photo side-by-side with the new picture they had taken at Clara's diner.

""Mom sent me to find you so I wouldn't be alone,"" Leo said, looking up at Jax with a gentle, mature smile. ""And now I'm home.""
Jax wrapped his arm around his son's shoulders, pulling him close as they watched the sunrise together over the valley. The long, dark road was finally behind them, and ahead lay a lifetime of love, hope, and home."
