Chapter 13: The Legal Battle

Two months into their new life, a sharp knock sounded at the cabin door. Jax opened it to find a man in a sharp grey suit holding a manila folder.
""Jax Miller?"" the man asked formally. ""I'm Mr. Henderson from Child Protective Services. We received an application regarding the legal guardianship of Leo Vance.""
Jax felt his heart drop into his stomach. ""Is there a problem?""
""Because you were not listed on the official birth certificate, the state requires a formal custody hearing to grant you full legal guardianship,"" the agent explained, stepping inside to inspect the cabin. ""We have to evaluate your living environment, your income, and your criminal background.""
For the next two weeks, Jax worked tirelessly. He cleaned every inch of the cabin, secured a steady legal income from the repair shop, and hired a family lawyer with every dollar he had saved.
On the day of the court hearing, the judge looked over the documents while Jax sat nervously at the defense table, wearing a dark suit that felt tight around his shoulders.
Unexpectedly, the doors at the back of the courtroom swung open. Clara walked in, followed by Big Mike and four other club members, all dressed neatly to show their support. Clara stepped up to the witness stand and gave a powerful testimony about Jax’s transformation, his devotion to Leo, and his unwavering love for the child.

The judge looked over her glasses at Jax, then at the crowded courtroom filled with people backing him up. She signed the papers with a crisp flourish.
""Guardianship approved,"" the judge declared, smiling warmly. ""Bring that boy home, Mr. Miller.""
