Chapter 3: The Scent of Yeast and Hope

Three weeks later, reality was a bitter pill. Sarah had been rejected from a dozen corporate jobs; Marcus had ensured her reputation in their social circle was ruined. Walking back to the motel in the pouring rain, they took shelter under the faded awning of a rundown bakery. The sign read Higgins’ Loaf. Inside, an elderly woman struggled to lift a sack of flour. Without hesitating, Sarah walked in, lifted the sack, and looked at the exhausted owner. "I'll work for minimum wage," Sarah said. "And I learn fast." Mrs. Higgins looked at her, then down at the quiet, polite boy beside her. "Can you start now?"
