It was a stormy evening when Sarah heard a faint knock at the bakery’s back door. She opened it to find a soaked, shivering little girl holding a plush rabbit. It was Lily, Marcus’s daughter, now eight years old. She had run away from her mother's screaming matches and wandered the city, finding her way to the address she had seen on her father's returned packages. Sarah didn't see the child of the woman who ruined her marriage. She only saw a terrified little girl. She pulled her inside, wrapped her in a blanket, and made her a cup of hot cocoa.
