Chapter 15: The Canvas of Life

Ten years later. An upscale art gallery downtown was packed with people. The critics were raving about the city’s newest artistic prodigy, a twenty-year-old named Leo. The exhibit was titled Resilience.

In the center of the gallery stood the masterpiece. It wasn't a painting of a grand mansion or a sorrowful tragedy. It was a stunning, hyper-realistic oil painting of a woman in a flour-dusted apron, her face illuminated by the golden glow of a baker's oven. Her eyes were fiercely kind, her posture unbroken.

Standing in front of it, Sarah wiped a stray tear from her cheek. Leo wrapped his arm around her shoulders. A teenage Lily, visiting for the weekend, hugged Sarah from the other side. Far in the back of the room, standing near the exit, an older, humbled Marcus watched them. He didn't approach. He just smiled sadly, turned, and walked out into the night, knowing that while he had broken their world, they had built a far more beautiful one without him.
