Chapter 7

The subterranean service corridors beneath the hospital smelled of industrial detergent, damp concrete, and heated steam pipes that hissed rhythmically along the low ceiling. Miller led the way with a tactical flashlight beam cutting through the gloom, while Raymond kept a close, protective hand on Elena’s arm as they navigated the uneven flooring. The distant sounds of the lockdown klaxon were muffled down here, replaced by the deep, mechanical thrum of the building's primary HVAC and generator systems.

"This way," Miller whispered, pausing before a heavy metal door marked with a faded yellow biohazard symbol. "It connects to the old municipal steam tunnels that run beneath the city district. It hasn't been mapped on the modern civic registry since the seventies, which means Vance Global’s network will not track us through here."

Elena clutched her leather handbag tight, her chest heaving slightly from the physical exertion of descending four flights of concrete stairs while carrying the weight of her pregnancy. Yet, her mind remained sharp. "My father mentioned these tunnels once," she recalled, her voice echoing softly in the cramped space. "He said the original founders of the pharmaceutical division used them to move unrecorded research documents between the main laboratory and the private estate during federal audits."

Raymond unlocked the rusted padlock with a heavy skeleton key he pulled from his pocket—a key that looked ancient compared to modern digital access cards. The heavy iron door swung inward with a prolonged groan of stressed metal, revealing a dark, brick-lined tunnel stretching into the subterranean gloom.

"Your father was a cautious man, Elena," Raymond said, stepping through the threshold first and sweeping his own flashlight beam across the damp archways. "He knew that corporate greed had corrupted the board long before he took over as CEO. That is why he set up the secondary trust under federal seal. He anticipated this exact betrayal."

As they stepped inside, the heavy iron door swung shut behind them with a solid, echoing thud that effectively sealed them off from the hospital above. The air was cool and stagnant, but it was safe. For the first time in hours, the constant surveillance, the clinical threats, and the physical violence of Clara’s assault felt distant, replaced by the grim determination to uncover the truth.

They walked in silence for nearly twenty minutes, the beam of their flashlights illuminating dripping condensation on the brickwork and ancient pipes wrapped in frayed asbestos insulation. Every step brought them closer to the historical archives beneath the city, and closer to the evidence that could dismantle Vance Global once and for all.

"We're approaching the junction," Miller signaled, raising a gloved hand to halt their progress as a faint circle of natural light appeared at the end of the tunnel ahead, marking the exit into the abandoned carriage house of the Vance estate.
