Chapter 5

The hospital room felt remarkably different once the oppressive presence of Dr. Harrison and Clara had been removed. The harsh fluorescent lights seemed slightly dimmed, and the lingering scent of antiseptic was replaced by the quiet reassurance of family protection. Raymond settled into the plastic visitor's chair beside the bed, his dark overcoat draped over the backrest, revealing a finely pressed tweed vest and a gold pocket watch chain.

"They underestimated how fast I could mobilize," Raymond said quietly, his gaze fixed on Elena’s bruised cheek with a lingering, protective intensity. "When you called, I was already reviewing the quarterly trust disbursements. Vance Global has been routing millions of dollars into undocumented shell accounts for the past six months. This hospital is heavily invested in those same portfolios. They weren't just trying to take custody of your child, Elena—they were trying to eliminate the primary heir to the entire corporate restructuring."

Elena listened, her hand resting protectively over her pregnant belly. The physical shock of Clara’s strike had faded into a dull, throbbing ache, but her mind was sharper than it had been in months. "My father knew something was wrong before he died," she realized aloud, the pieces finally clicking together in her head. "That's why he kept me away from the board meetings. That's why he insisted I live in relative seclusion. He wasn't being overprotective; he was hiding me from them."

"Precisely," Raymond nodded, pulling a sleek tablet from his briefcase to review a series of encrypted financial documents. "Your father’s death was ruled a sudden cardiac arrest, but the autopsy report was sealed under a medical confidentiality waiver signed by Dr. Harrison himself. We need to get you out of this facility immediately. Even with my security team holding the perimeter, the board controls the hospital's legal department. They will file an emergency injunction within the hour."

Elena nodded, pushing herself up against the pillows. Her limbs felt heavy from the stress, but her resolve was unbreakable. "Where do we go? My apartment is compromised. Clara knows the security codes, and the building management is under Vance Global payroll."

"We go to the estate in upstate New York," Raymond replied without hesitation. "Your grandfather’s old library has a secure offline server containing every physical ledger from the company's inception. If there is proof of embezzlement, medical fraud, or worse, it’s hidden behind those oak-paneled walls."

Just as Raymond reached to assist Elena out of the hospital bed, a sharp, piercing alarm echoed through the corridor. It wasn't a fire alarm; it was the facility’s internal lockdown klaxon, signaling that external forces had just breached the hospital’s main entrance from the parking garage.
